Feasts are among the most important and sacred moments in the Cree tradition. Feasts symbolize the relationship between the community of animals and that of humans and reflect the importance of sharing, especially sharing of food. Carrying out a feast in the proper manner is a way of showing respect to the animals who have given themselves for the benefit of the people.
The feast is proceeded by a prayer of thanks and the throwing of a small portion of the different feast foods into the fire by the host of the feast. Some elders place grease on the door frame of the feast dwelling to show respect to that animal.
All food from the feast is considered sacred, and it is especially important that it not be wasted or spoiled in any manner. People leave feasts with plates piled high with food to be eaten later. It is critical that the food be properly covered before leaving the feast dwelling.
