Item: paddles

Date: unknown

Area: James Bay

Catalogue number: British Museum 1923.6.194ab

Dimensions: Length of top paddle: 70.5cm; length of bottom paddle: 71cm

Technique: Tops of handles and blades are painted.

Motifs: none

Collector: Mrs.B. Braithewaite-Batty

Notes: Female doll, male doll and canoe with paddles were acquired as a set. According to sketches by Adney and Chappelle (p.133), the top paddle is for a woman and the bottom one is for a man. As their reference is a canoe from the Winisk River District, it raises the question whether these objects are from the west coast rather than the east coast of James Bay, or if these differences are universal on both coasts.
